Overview

To kick off 2025, the GARP New York Chapter will host an exciting event on artificial intelligence . Join us for an insightful discussion on the role and state of AI in investment and risk management, exploring how AI technologies are revolutionizing investment decision-making, risk assessment and mitigation across the financial services industry. 

Our speakers will share insights into the current state of artificial intelligence in investment and risk management and how AI can help decision-makers stay ahead of potential issues: 

  • What new risks does AI bring to financial services organizations and to our economy? 
  • How can risk managers leverage AI to be more effective and efficient in their roles?  
  • What are the ingredients for successful governance of AI in financial institutions? 
  • What does responsible AI mean for our industry? How shall we adopt it?  

Following the panel discussion, please join us for a networking reception.

Andrew Chin is Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer and a member of the firm’s Operating Committee. In this role, he leads the firm’s strategy to leverage AI in transforming the organization and driving better outcomes for clients and the firm. Previously, Chin was the Head of Investment Solutions and Sciences, overseeing the research, management and strategic growth of the firm’s asset-allocation, data science, index and tax-management businesses. From 2022 to 2023, he was the head of Quantitative Research and chief data scientist, developing and optimizing quantitative research and data science infrastructure, capabilities and resources across the organization. As the firm’s chief risk officer from 2009 to 2021, Chin led all aspects of risk management and built a global team to identify, manage and mitigate the various risks across the organization. He has held various leadership roles in quantitative research, risk management and portfolio management in New York and London since joining the firm in 1997. Before joining AB, Chin spent three years as a project manager and business analyst in global investment management at Bankers Trust. He holds a BA in math and computer science, and an MBA in finance from Cornell University.

Sandeep Mangaraj was previously a managing director at Microsoft, where he led the US Fintech team. His team managed the end-to-end relationship with customers, ensuring they achieve their business outcomes with the leading technology platform and partner ecosystem that Microsoft offers. With deep expertise in Financial Services, Sandeep focused on bridging the gap between the customers' goals and Microsoft's innovative solutions. He is particularly passionate about the transformative platform change driven by AI.

Prior to Microsoft, Sandeep honed his skills as a Partner at a Big 4 firm, where he navigated clients through disruptive challenges and helped them capitalize on new technological capabilities. His passion for driving meaningful change is evident in his work, where he consistently fosters a strong culture and purpose within his team.

Ronald Ratcliffe, PhD, is a Managing Director in BlackRock’s Applied Portfolio Analysis practice area within the Analytics & Quantitative Solutions (AQS) group. He focuses on multi-asset portfolio risk, scenario analysis, and portfolio construction.

Dr. Ratcliffe's service with BlackRock dates back to 2004, including his years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. Prior to joining AQS, he led the Market-Driven Scenarios (MDS) initiative as Head of Cross-Platform Scenario Analysis in the Risk & Quantitative Analysis (RQA) group. Previously in RQA, he was Head of Multi-Asset Investment Risk for the Americas West region. In the Portfolio Management Group (PMG), he was a portfolio manager and developed systematic macro trading strategies. Prior to joining BGI, Dr. Ratcliffe was a senior manager at KPMG in corporate valuation and international transfer pricing. Previously, he was the chief economist for Latin America at SG Cowen Securities, a subsidiary of Societe Generale. Before that he was with Bankers Trust Company (now part of Deutsche Bank) where he carried out country risk analysis.

Dr. Ratcliffe earned BA degrees in economics and in political science, with distinction and with departmental honors in economics, from Stanford University. He received a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
