2023 IEF | GARP Global Energy Risk Forum

Energy Security and Transition in the New Risk Environment

June 6-7, 2023 | Paris, France

Overview

The International Energy Forum (IEF) and Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) will convene the IEF | GARP Global Energy Risk Forum June 6-7, 2023 in Paris, France. The Forum invites senior energy and climate risk managers from government, industry, and research centers to deepen insight on the themes explored in the virtual sessions IEF and GARP hosted during the pandemic.

Note: This is an invitation-only event. If you've received an invitation at this time, please RSVP.

International collaboration successfully absorbed the demand shock that lockdowns dealt to world markets, and advanced global consensus on climate solutions. But a robust return of energy demand during the recovery and sustained weakening of oil and gas investment incentives steadily increases volatility, energy and commodity prices. As markets tighten, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the impact of sanctions on physical and financial interactions see prices spike and inflation soar.

Though demand has returned to pre-pandemic levels the energy landscape has changed and casts supply-side and macroeconomic risks in sharp relief. This presents producers and consumers with new challenges for which a range of policy and risk management solutions to energy security and sustainability questions are being reevaluated and updated. To safeguard an inclusive global economic recovery and allow just and orderly energy transitions to succeed, these will be addressed in the following sessions:

  1. Transformative Trends in Energy Supply and Demand
  2. Responsible Environmental, Social, and Governance
  3. Evolving Physical-Financial Energy Market Interactions

Transformative Trends in Energy Supply and Demand

View Details

Potential discussion topics:

  • Digitalization improves the safety, productivity, accessibility and sustainability of energy systems, but raises security and privacy risks, disrupts markets, businesses and workers. How can we model its effects and ensure its impact is positive, efficient and safe?
  • Are this year’s warmer weather trends and a robust global natural gas market providing a false sense of security?
  • Follow the oil demand story. With an increase in demand in all forms of energy, what role can emerging markets play in meeting these demands?
  • How do we balance rapidly increasing technology, social and capital demands with the desire for a quick energy transition?
  • How do we address and prioritize infrastructure needs in the short and long term given the costs, lack of investment, delayed supply maintenance and continued supply chain issues?

Potential discussion topics:

  • ESG-related data is incomplete, lacks standardization and historical insight, and is not always transparent and available, how should the industry address these challenges?
  • What should be the role of ESG in the energy sector? Does ESG present value-added opportunities?
  • What role should ESG play in an energy firm’s long-term value creation strategies to investors and other stakeholders?
  • Would an ESG best practices document be possible and useful for the global energy industry?
  • Should the energy industry develop a standardized framework and standards to address the challenges around clarity, consistency, and comparability for reporting ESG metrics?
  • Should sustainability-related factors be audited and transparently reported?

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Luncheon

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Evolving Physical-Financial Energy Market Interactions

View Details

Potential discussion topics:

  • Given today’s volatile oil markets, uncertain and inconsistent government energy policies, a rapid increase in energy demand, and an uncertain energy transition, are current financial instruments and financing vehicles sufficient?
  • What measures can be taken to deal with grid resilience, reliability, and redundancy of fuel sources and to better ensure the affordability of energy globally?
  • Infrastructure development is imperative to advancing societies and meeting energy demand. What backstop measures should the public sector put into place, especially for emerging economies, to deal with the risks of financing these developments?

3:00 PM - 3:15 PM
