Banks, NBFCs, and fintech lenders in India are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence to make retail and small business credit decisions. For smaller, unsecured loans, this decision is often automated and near-instant, with limited human review. Larger or secured retail loans, such as mortgages, typically still involve human underwriters, though the share of these loans that are automated continues to grow.
As AI takes on a bigger role in these decisions, regulators and the industry are paying closer attention to a set of questions around the responsible use of AI:
- How do lenders govern the AI models they use, including those supplied by outside technology vendors, and manage their dependence on technology partners?
- What data do these models rely on, especially newer types of data, and how can lenders ensure appropriate, responsible outcomes for different groups of borrowers?
- How are credit decisions explained to customers, including those whose applications are declined?
- How do lenders monitor models once they are live, and when and how should a human step in?
Join the GARP Mumbai Chapter as we bring together senior leaders in a panel discussion to share lessons and emerging practices on these questions in a practical way, grounded in what's happening in the industry.
