Melissa Hernández is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Private Law and the eLaw - Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University. Her research is centred on developing standards for quantum applications within the financial sector. 

Melissa holds a JD from Universidad de Costa Rica, a postgraduate qualification in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, an alumni credential in Economic Law with an emphasis in International Trade from Universidad Estatal a Distancia de Costa Rica (she does not currently hold a practising certificate), and an LL.M. in International Technology Law from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. 

Prior to joining Leiden University, Melissa amassed experience as legal counsel in the private sector, specifically for financial and insurance institutions, as well as the Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce. In these roles, she provided legal advice, coordinated various departments and committees, and contributed to working groups dedicated to the drafting and reform of legislative bills.
