The GARP Japan Chapter is honored to welcome Richard Apostolik, GARP President and CEO to give a few introductory remarks for our upcoming meeting 

First, Mr. Hiroaki Sakuma, Director, AI Governance Association (AIGA), will introduce the AIGA and the work it is doing to support capacity building on the safe use of AI; including insight on the sources of risk associated with implementation of AI models, the current state of AI corporate governance, and principles for ensuring safe deployment of AI tools within Japanese companies.   

This presentation will be followed by a panel discussion among local finance professionals about GARP’s Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation. These experienced risk professionals will share their perspective on the benefits of earning the FRM Certification, specifically illustrating how knowledge and skills gained from the FRM curriculum has been applied in their careers. They’ll also provide suggestions for study methods and tips for completing the FRM Certification. 

Registration is required as seats are limited. Priority will be given to GARP Individual Members.

7:25 – 7:50 pm: Panel discussion with audience Q&A by FRM holders among Japanese banks  

7:50 – 7:55 pm: Video messages from Certified FRM professionals at overseas branches of Japanese banks 

7:55 – 8:00 pm: Closing remarks by Mr Spillo, Co-director of GARP Japan 

8:00 – 9:00 pm: Networking reception

Hiroaki Sakuma is Director and Secretary-General of the AI Governance Association (AIGA) and Consulting Manager at Smart Governance, Inc. 

He began his career at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), developing national AI and data policies. He later worked at Bain & Company Japan and Robust Intelligence before assuming his current roles. 

At AIGA, he leads multi-stakeholder initiatives on AI governance standards and policy proposals. At Smart Governance, he supports organizations in building robust technology governance frameworks. He also serves as Policy Advisor on data utilization policy to the Cabinet Secretariat of Japan. 

In addition, he conducts academic research from a sociological perspective on public discourse surrounding AI risks. He holds a Master’s degree in Socio-information and communication Studies.

Kento Koseki joined SMBC Nikko Securities in 2021 and has been responsible for market risk management to this day. 

He is primarily engaged in risk analysis and management related to interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives, and he obtained the FRM certification in 2024. 

He holds a Master's degree in engineering from the University of Tokyo, with a major in civil engineering.

Mr. Hyodo leads the model validation department at MUFG, specializing in Model Risk Management. Previously, he worked on the development of Stress Testing Models with his expertise in Credit Risk. He joined MUFG in 2013 and holds a master’s degree in Mathematics from Kyoto University and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Tokyo.

Oshime joined Mizuho FG in 2017. He is responsible for model validation and advancing the establishment of model risk governance.
