Sydney: The world is increasingly exposed to the financial consequences of physical climate risks, as evidenced by the staggering USD 80 billion in insured losses from natural catastrophes in just the first half of 2025, nearly double the 10-year average. The California wildfires alone accounted for USD 40 billion, marking the highest-ever insured loss from a wildfire event. These events are no longer statistical outliers; they are becoming the norm, driven by prolonged droughts, shifting rainfall patterns, and expanding asset exposure in high-risk zones.

Despite global efforts, the world is not on track to meet greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets, increasing the likelihood of more frequent and severe climate-related disasters. These risks pose cascading threats to financial systems, affecting everything from insurance pricing to bank, insurance, superannuation and sovereign credit exposure. Analysing climate physical risks is no longer optional, it is essential for understanding financial vulnerability and guiding effective risk mitigation.

Join the GARP Sydney Chapter with Dr. Karl Mallon, who will discuss how the embers from climate-insurance contagion may be at the cusp of leaping across into the banking sector, and the increasing expectations from large investors for transparency on the scale of corporate and finance sector exposure to worsening climate physical risks. We will also explore tools that are now available to integrate climate risk into decision-making and build resilience in an increasingly volatile environment.

Registration is required as seats are limited. Priority will be given to GARP Individual Members.

Dr Karl Mallon is a founder of The Climate Risk Group which includes companies XDI and Climate Valuation. His team of scientists and engineers is behind much of the data people see in the public about the impacts of climate change in Australia: from analysis by the RBA to reports on insurance affordability on the ABC. XDI has twice been ranked as the world leader in physical risk analysis in 2025, and works with over 100 banks and asset managers around the world on risk quantification and adaptation.

With a background in both Physics and Mechanical Engineering, Karl has worked in climate change mitigation, policy and technical analysis since 1991, and has specialised in climate adaptation since 2005. His team’s pioneering work in developing technology to quantify the cost of extreme weather to the built environment led to the development of the Climate Risk Engines in 2012.

Karl is editor and co-author of ‘Renewable Energy Policy and Politics: A Handbook for Decision Making’ published by Earthscan (London) and a contributing author for ‘Practical Adaptation Studies’, published by Wiley. Karl is also a founding board member of The Climate Bonds Initiative (London).
