As firms evaluate the integration of AI into their day-to-day operations, it is increasingly important to proactively assess the potential risks and regulation associated with it. Join the GARP Toronto Chapter as we discuss how a new pillar of risk has presented itself through the rise of AI, how AI risk is best managed within organizations, and what role we, as risk professionals, can play in this technology revolution.

Hira Shahzad

Hira is a subject matter expert in Governance and Oversight of Technology Risk Management in the financial services industry. Currently leading the Technology Risk Management team for Canada Life, her mandate includes Cyber Security, AI, Technology Resilience and Regulatory Compliance oversight over the entire Technology organization. Joining Canada Life meant diving deeper into Technology risk management, and while implementing a brand-new technology risk management framework, including governance and processes at Canada Life, Hira co-drafted the first standard on the Ethical Design and Use of Artificial Intelligence for the CIO Standards Council (Govt of Canada).

Jun Yuan

Dr. Jun Yuan is a seasoned professional and recognized thought leader in financial risk management, with expertise that encompasses financial innovation analytics, including machine learning and climate risk. He currently serves as the Managing Director of Group Risk Management at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), leading risk analytics teams in Canada and the US to ensure the adoption of best industry practices in risk management. A pioneer in applying machine learning to financial innovation, he has utilized unsupervised learning to detect anomalies in market data and employed natural language processing for sentiment analysis and rating predictions.

Dr. Yuan has collaborated with partners from the Bank of Canada and faculty from the University of Toronto on machine learning research initiatives. These include a study on narrative monetary policy uncertainty using natural language processing and research on deep hedging for trading through reinforcement learning. He is an adjunct professor at Rotman and a senior fellow at the Munk School, University of Toronto

Desmond Alvares, MBA, MBCS CITP, CMA

Desmond has over twenty-five years of experience in Business, Project Management, Finance and IT Management. He is currently Senior Manager, Management Information Systems (MIS) at Grant Thornton LLP where he looks after the business management systems for the Canadian Operations.Desmond held various senior positions at KPMG, Capital One, CNA Insurance, TD, CIBC and UBS Private Banking in the Investment, Finance and Risk Management divisions as business analyst, Director and Project Manager. Desmond is actively involved in a number of professional organizations and educational institutions. As a Schulich School of Business MBA graduate with a focus on Finance, Accounting and Strategy, Desmond teaches MBA classes in Enterprise Risk Management, continues to act as mentor to Schulich's MBA Finance students and was instrumentally in creating and developing the Connect networking sessions for Alumni. He also a Board Director and a member of the Finance and Audit committee of The Centre for Education and Training assisting newcomers to Canada. Desmond is the Chapter Director for the Toronto Chapter of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) and has helped develop Operational Risk questions for the FRM exam.In addition to being a Chartered IT Professional (CITP), he is a Certified Management Accountant in Ontario and completed the Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Information System Audit (CISA) exams.Desmond has a B. Eng in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked with Financial Service, Legal, Health, Food and Beverage and Energy Resource companies and organizations to develop their Financial Systems and enhance their risk operations.
