Advanced Risk Management

May 8, 2014

For institutional investors, risk is the fuel that generates portfolio returns. At Commonfund, which manages $25 billion on behalf of nearly 1,400 endowments, foundations, pension funds and other institutional investors. risk management is the process of harnessing that fuel in the pursuit of better returns. Chief risk officer David Belmont describes Commonfund's "4-3-3" risk management approach: four pillars, or risk disciplines; three lines of defense; and the three differentiating features of governance, staffing and systems sophistication, and a perspective that includes alignment with the longer-term, active management risks that clients face.
